Born on July 7, 1927 in Yonkers, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Madeleine (Fulton) Retallick. Jean graduated from Pelham (NY) Manor High School and continued her education at Middlebury College. She married William T. Gouert in 1950.
